Volunteer brings joy through Bingo

Antwain Walker was raised by his grandparents. Perhaps that’s why he has such a soft spot in his heart for seniors. Walker is a dedicated volunteer at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd. He calls Bingo for about 50 residents from 6:15 – 7:45 p.m. every Tuesday evening – rain or shine.

“I have a passion for elderly people,” Walker said. “I’ve always had it. I think I do this because it’s a way I can serve mankind. And this Bingo, I get such a kick out of it.”

Married to Danielle for 11 years, Walker and his family are residents of Plainfield, IL.

Two young helpers accompany him every week - his daughters Savannah, 8, and Symone, 6. The girls are in charge of passing out prizes and clean up. They bring joy to the residents who are always glad to interact with children. The sisters love the both the experience of helping and the residents. Occasionally, Walker brings his neighbor’s daughters as well, creating a true intergenerational event.

“The residents enjoy the girls way more than they enjoy me,” he said. “And boy, the Bingo players keep me in line if I make a mistake!”

Walker has been known to show up with special treats and prizes. Working with the residents, Walker feels, is honoring his grandfather, age 91, and grandmother, 85.

“I don’t do it for any kind of recognition,” he said, “but I know it makes a difference. Sometimes the adult children seek me out to tell me how much they appreciate what I do. Their thanks are not necessary, but it is nice to know I’m helping in some small way.”

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments as well as a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
