The Timbers of ShorewoodIndependent, Assisted Living and Short-Term Stay Retirement Community

Gentle Yoga

Yoga for seniors in Will CountyChristi Smith teaches Gentle Yoga from 1 – 2 p.m. on Wednesdays in the ballroom of The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood. The public is welcome to participate for $5 per session. Timbers’ residents may attend at no cost.

Yoga is a form of movement that adapts to one’s needs and abilities. It deals with the whole being. One of the great things about yoga is it’s so adaptable to different populations with diverse physical abilities and needs.

The benefits of gentle yoga for seniors are much the same as those for the general populations: increased muscle tone, balance, strength and improved mood. Breathing exercises increase lung capacity. Participants can expect their posture to improve and they may sleep better. Yoga can counteract stress, too.

“My goals are to educate, instruct and inspire,” Smith said. “I am deeply committed to the overall safety and success of each person I teach.”

Smith is a certified yoga instructor, certified personal trainer, youth conditioning specialist, youth nutritionist and spinning instructor. Athletics, health and wellness have been a part of Smith’s life since childhood. In school, she played basketball, tennis, and ran track. As an adult she has finished multiple marathons and triathlons.

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides senior independent living and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.

The public is welcome and, again, the cost is $5 per session. For more information contact Shelly Goggins at (815) 609-0669.
