Identity Theft Seminar

identity-theftA representative of BMO Harris Bank will present information on identity theft – what is it, how to prevent it and what to do if it happens – at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, in the Elms Community Room at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood. The event is free and open the public.

Identity theft happens when someone uses information about you without your permission. They could use your name and address, credit card or bank account numbers, Social Security number and medical insurance account numbers.

A thief might get a credit card using your name. He or she could change the address, have bills come to him or her, then never pay the bills. That means the credit card company thinks you are not paying the bills which in turn will hurt your credit.

An identity thief can use your name and information to buy things with your credit cards, get new credit cards, steal your tax refund, get medical care or pretend to be you if they are arrested.

The talk will end with a question and answer session.
