Shorewood Seniors Get Smart – Timbers Academy for Seniors Graduates Challenge Health Misinformation

The Timbers of Shorewood Senior Living held a graduation ceremony for 22 residents who completed the Timbers’ Academy for Seniors 24-week course – “Medical Myths, Lies, and Half Truths” on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Timbers, 1100 N. River Rd, Shorewood. At the graduation, each resident received a certificate of achievement while the march, “Pomp and Circumstance” played.

“Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths,” course aims to equip individuals with the critical thinking skills needed to discern scientific truth from common medical misinformation. It debunks prevalent myths regarding hydration, nutrition, disease prevention, and alternative medicine practices, ultimately providing evidence-based guidelines for informed health decisions.

“It is inspiring to see the residents show up each week ready to learn and grow,” said Amy Odell, director of activities at The Timbers. “They did not limit themselves and were open to many subjects and ideas presented in the course. The group discussions after each lecture were engaging and informative.”

Launched in 2018, the Timbers’ Academy for Seniors features courses on a wide range of topics. Each weekly class includes a lecture and a group discussion where residents can share their experience and understanding on the topic.

“We are very aware that continuing education has significant positive benefits for seniors,” Odell said. “We offer the Academy for Seniors for learning, keeping the mind sharp, and camaraderie.”
