Seated Tai Chi – Fridays

Seniors at the Timbers of Shorewood in the Seated Tai Chi class.

The Timbers of Shorewood Senior Living has formed a new partnership with Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, to host a Seated Tai Chi exercise program on Fridays at 10 a.m. from January 2 – February 20, 2026. The exercise series is free and open to the public for seniors aged 60 and older.

The program is designed to accommodate all fitness levels, offering a low-impact way for seniors to improve their physical and mental well-being. Tai Chi is a moving meditation that combines postures and movements into an elegant and gentle flowing form. These postures stretch and strengthen many of the muscles and tendons of the body. In addition, the movements stabilize balance, increase flexibility, enhance circulation and reduce stress.

“This gentle exercise class is a wonderful opportunity for seniors in the area to stay active and connected,” said Amy Odell, activities director at the Timbers of Shorewood. “We had a popular weekly Tai Chi class before the pandemic, but the teacher didn’t return. We’re so happy to offer this class again and it’s already been very popular.”

Tai Chi is sponsored in part by a grant through AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet. Catholic Charities is a faith-based organization dedicated to providing services to people in need and fostering community connection.
