Voted Best Senior Care Community in Will County

The Timbers of Shorewood named Business of the Year

Shorewood Business of the Year

The members of the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce named The Timbers of Shorewood the 2016 Large Business of the Year Award. A plaque was presented at the chamber’s fundraising event, “Denim and Diamonds” on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Skooter’s Roadhouse in Shorewood.

“We are humbled by this tribute,” said Faith Ann Varga, executive director of The Timbers. “We thank the chamber for recognizing our efforts.”

In 2002, The Timbers of Shorewood opened its doors to gracious senior living in the greater Will County area. Located at 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood. The Timbers is an independent and assisted living rental community with 186 one and two bedroom apartments.

The Timbers plays an integral role as a neighbor in the community by incorporating the public into its fold. Families from the surrounding areas are invited to hundreds of educational and social events each month. In addition, The Timbers opens its meeting space to many local community clubs and organizations.

A popular free event is the annual Seniors’ Senior Prom, held each June. People from the community and Timbers’ residents dress in finery and dance the night away to the music of a full orchestra. The king and queen of The Timbers are crowned at the prom, too.

There are (literally) hundreds of events and activities a month at The Timbers, most of which are free and open to the public. Free exercise classes are held twice a day, there’s a caregiver support group open to the public; no association with The Timbers is required in order to participate. There are monthly ballroom dances, Tai Chi, travel lectures, health lectures, musical entertainment, church services, sing-a-longs, a therapy dog, a book club, bingo, happy hours, fireside chats, arts and crafts, birthday parties and many more.

The Timbers partners with many elementary schools, junior highs and high schools in order to foster intergenerational contact. Whether the school is entertaining Timbers residents with concerts or presenting Valentines to the seniors, important links to the community are strengthened.

There are other major events free and open to families such as the annual Easter egg hunt with 15,000 Easter eggs stuffed with candy. Halloween features a spook house with volunteers in ghoulish costumes and 15 different rooms, each scarier than the last.

“The final big event of the year is our Christmas party,” Varga said. “We have lost count as to how many trees are decorated throughout this building. Santa and his elves delight the kids with free pictures and a chance to see real reindeers.”

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides senior independent living and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Residents whose needs may change are able to stay in the same place and receive appropriate and compassionate care. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
